1. The Royal Tenenbaums Wes Anderson is brilliant, and although it's pretty 'hip' to like his movies, I genuinely think he's amazing and that this is one of the best movies ever made. from the characters, to their relationships, to the story, to the set, to the music, to the cast, to the narration, to the humor, to the overall message-- it's got everything. and if a movie can make me wonder throughout the whole thing where the hell it's going, and then really go somewhere- and somewhere amazing- then wow.
2. Igby Goes Down Great coming-of-age story, but moreso an amazing character study.
3. You Can Count On Me Mark Ruffalo is probably my favorite actor, and this is his best. The relationship between a brother and sister in this movie, and most importantly the relationship between an uncle and a nephew- make this movie what it is.
4. Born Into Brothels A documentary that will make you feel amazing about life and the impact we can have on others, yet feel so sad and helpless at the same time. this movie cemented for me how much i want to be an art teacher, a photography teacher specifically. amazing.
5. Everything Is Illuminated Beautiful story, beautifully done!

close runners up: american history x (actually this would probably be a tie with one that's already in there),sylvia, eternal sunshine, shopgirl, mona lisa smile, pulp fiction, saved!, shawshank redemption, and my top favorite funny movie of all time: Wet Hot American Summer.
