Song | Band (who Covered The Song) | notes | |
1. | All Along The Watchtower | Jimi Hendrix | originally bob dylan (robert zimmerman). though i personally like the original better, this cover is amazing. different in so many ways, and succeeds in each |
2. | Hurt | Johnny Cash | so different. amazing original (by NIN), amazing cover |
3. | Scarlet Begonias | Sublime | the dead's version is amazing. sublime's version is too. how wonderful |
4. | My Favorite Things | John Coltrane | good enough to name the album after it |
5. | Heartbeats | Jose Gonzales | no offense to the knife, but this version is just great |
note: this list is compiled based on certain criteria. a cover that is good enough to make this list has to be different (ie can't be the same song and practically the same version only by someone else). the covers have to be good. it helps to have a killer original (ie watchtower, hurt, begonias). and i decided to choose songs that are on albums, because that shows the cover group really thought they could pull it off. as a live show, anyone can cover nearly anything. but it needs to be something special to make this list. these artists obviously thought they did something right, and i agree.
other mentionables: me & bobby mcgee (janis joplin, covered by the dead), we will become silhouettes (postal service, covered by the shins), anything on the life aquatic soundtrack (david bowie, covered by seu george), woodstock (joni mitchell, covered by csn. joni's version is much better)

you're right, jose's version is great, but the knife's version is soooo great, in a different way. i agree though, the cover's gotta be different.. and jose definitely pulled that off. you have to admit, it would have been a lot more impressive if the knife's version was the cover.. it's easy to cover a song acoustically.
