my return to china (live updates!)
I'm gonna be posting little updates, so check back every now and then!
[12:23pm CST, San francisco airport, gate 100] I'm on my way! I left my apt in Houston bright and early around 4:45, settling my nerves of a possibly missed flight (I'm a compernolle. what can I say). the flight felt long, but i got some work done and read a bit of 'you shall know our velocity' by dave eggars (thanks nick. i'll get it back to you eventually). a particularly nice passage was during a time when the narrator felt "off" and needed to go somewhere, anywhere. his buddy had no idea what was wrong but made every effort for his friend. the narrator described his friend as looking at him "the way a father looks at his son when the son needs his mother." I liked that for some reason. anyway, I'm off to get sushi (I'm in California!), but I'll keep you all posted!
[12:36pm CST] theyre selling 6.3 yuan for a dollar! the exchange rate is closer to 7.45! I forgot how bad airports are about that. there are also weird iPod vending machines here. in case you so desperately want to listen to music you can't put on your iPod unless you already have it. iPod vending machines! crazy.
[1:26pm CST] very cute girl in boarding group 4. here's to hoping she's in seat 54B. I forgot to recharge my computer's battery since my flight here. blast.
[1:42pm CST] haha im flying home in 54c. now im in 49h. but she's actually in 54D! isn't that some kind of quasi-omen? maybe?
[1:48pm CST] my phone's got to go into airplane mode. so until next time (etd 4:40am CST), here goes!
[4:56am CST] wo dao le! i made it!
[6:19am CST] we just had dinner (breakfast?) at an airport restaurant. apparently the meal for the two of us could have paid for a week's supply of food. thanks, bray! we're waiting for "the expert" and then we're off to le hotel (that's the name). apparently they have some big plans regarding entertainment, which i imagine will be a nice (though touristy) way to see the city. I'm tired as hell and ready to get to my apartment/wander. I'm in hong kong! (sidenote: muscle memory for some reason makes me type honk kong all the time. which is funny. I think.)
[6:46am CST] still in the airport. chinese flight attendants are bloody gorgeous.
[9:31am CST] this hotel is amazing. no wireless, so almost amazing. ill upload photos soon. can i drink the tap here? i should find out. start work in 7 hours. the americans like to start early, i guess. the hong kongans start between 9 & 10. what a life. well, im off to bed. im in hong kong!

That's a great book. The character named Hand is really named Brent Hoff, and he is the editor of the Wholphin where I am interning. He's a really cool guy, bought me dinner the night I started working. Anyway, you can read knowing that most everything in that book really happened.
We're both in San Francisco! If your flight gets cancelled, give me a ring and we can hang.
