monday morning, 3 a.m.

klcomp joked some time ago about how every weekend, for me, has been fantastic until right up near the end, when, for whatever reason, turned sour and nasty:

  • september 14-17: my first weekend. nice, pleasant weekend. until the countdown-til-house ran to zero and i learned, at the last minute, that my cable was disconnected when i ordered internet, and houston is too spread out for actual television broadcasting, so i had to wait two days until the download was complete.
  • september 21-october 14: after finally getting comfortable with my life in houston and enjoying my routine, someone knocks on the door with a bunch of suitcases. i later find out he pooped in a bag.
  • september 28-30: another great weekend. had a fancy schmancy dinner with the boss and had a great time. i was thrilled at the prospect of having my own place again, until i found out that my roommate was merely being replaced by another.
  • october 12-14: Lizerbeam came to visit. such a blast. went to some nice dinners, drank some good coffee and booze, went to see IMAX fish stuff. until she left.
  • october 19-21: visited the crew over in colorado springs. i don't think words could describe how high i was that weekend. we went to montague's, phantom canyon, adam's, palmer park. i got to spend some good solid time with jeremy. beautiful. until my life flashed before my eyes.
  • october 26-28: visited simonite in austin. it was a blast. we installed leaopard (mac os x 10.5), drank some good coffee and booze. saw joanna newsom, my future wife. wonderful. until i was driving home and my car broke down.
  • november 10-11: simonite came to visit me in houston. it was a great time, until i noticed that my favorite coffee shop had unexpectedly gone out of business, thus requiring me to drive 25 minutes to go to any nice coffee place.
  • november 21-25: klcomp, The Invincible Blab and Paul came to visit. great weekend. we had a nice thanksgiving affair, saw some good movies. more than anything, the four of us got to spend some solid time together, which was simply amazing. for some reason we went to galveston (which could be a good enough example of this), and on the way home, we had to drive through horrible horrible rain. yuck.
  • november 26 - december 10: i went to hong kong and hangzhou. until i had to come back to houston.

which brings me to the lovely break i've had these last two weeks. i can't really even begin listing all of the great stuff that's happened these last two weeks, but i've mentioned some in a few previous blogs, which should be sufficient. and i've been lucky enough to come to san francisco to visit nellie and meiling and enjoy this glorious city.

until i was on my way to the airport and learned my flight was delayed, resulting in a would-be missed layover, so, after an hour and a half in line, they put me on the earliest available flight. and i mean earliest. i woke up at 3:30am so i could get the airport for my 6:00 flight. which, given said pattern, was of course delayed until 8:30. i won't miss my layover, but part of me is kicking myself knowing i could have slept another 2+ hours. but it could be worse, right?

[note: i don't mean to be totally negative. in fact, i'm pretty happy right now, listening to simon & garfunkel, drinking some airport-quality coffee, playing on my computer. and, if you look closely, you'll notice there was a good weekend or two in there that didn't end poorly]

Sorry, MatchBox 20 might be my only response to the time 3:00am from now on.

ugh. i feel you. i was supposed to come back from florida on the 2nd.. but my flight out was so delayed that i would have missed my connection in dallas. so i stayed in florida an extra night, supposed to leave at 11 am the next day. THAT flight got delayed.. so much so that i'd miss my connection in dallas.. AGAIN. the next flight out of dallas to colorado springs wasn't until 6. it sucked.

sounds awful, holly. i hate traveling sometimes.

poppy-- curse you! i've had that song stuck in my head all day now!

THE Lowly Peon | January 8 @ 9:28am

Heh, sorry about that.

Poppy | January 8 @ 7:59pm

yeah traveling sucks.

traveling is annoying until you have something cool happens to you as a result of a totally irritating delay: you meet a cool person headed to the same place, discover that the airport food is wretched except for one very small piece of authentic german chocolate hidden behind the double king-size snickers bar, or you have some extra time to finish that really long book that you wouldn't have finished otherwise. just to put a different spin on things. i prolly wouldn't be saying this if i was delayed at the moment.
