pooh

what seems like forever ago, i was talking to kate about life and such, and daosim came up in the conversation. i personally find the dao de jing (aka tao teh ching) to be quite beautiful, and we wound up talking about some general ideas of it, which led the conversation to the tao of pooh.

kate asked me which winnie the pooh character i thought i was most like. it took me a while, and a bit of pointless blather to learn that my internal winnie the pooh character changes fairly often. so let's see...

  • winnie the pooh- cool guy. likes honey. very simple. likes to go with the flow. but sometimes his laid-back-ness can be a problem, naively following wherever his nose takes him (or the rumbly in his tumbly).
  • piglet- so cute and little! very shy, piglet often needs someone to cast a shadow for him to hide in. if he has a good idea, he often hesitates and waits til he can talk to his closest friend, pooh. generally a very happy guy, i'd say piglet enjoys life quite a bit, given his close friends, some alone time, and the absence of any heffalumps or woozles
  • tigger- t-i-double guh-er. this guy's got more zest for life than most people even dream of. he's bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, fun fun fun fun fun. and the most wonderful thing about tigger is he's the only one. it often seems nothing can bring him down. but there are all those naysayers out there (like rabbit) who try repeatedly to bring him down to their level. usually, tigger bounces it off, but sometimes, it gets to him. and brings him down. way down.
  • rabbit- better than everyone, and not often afraid to show it. rabbit tends to be bossy and impatient. his desire to lead, perhaps fueled by arrogance, often gets good results, though sometimes can go astray. he can't seem to let little things pass, and will bring people down to assure they see the problem. he has a good heart, though. knowing more than everyone, he tries hard to show people what he has to offer, to teach them, to show them the way. and he sure keeps a nice garden!
  • eeyore- poor eeyore has had some bad luck building that house of his out of wraggly little twigs. he's got quite a bit to offer-- he's smart, and never shoves it down anyone's throat. he offers his advice only when it's sought. however, maybe it's time eeyore started looking on the brighter side of things? just a though, ol' buddy
  • kanga- the mother figure. kanga always talks in a soft, calming voice, very caring and protective. she takes care of those in her life. perhaps sometimes a little too cautious, kanga sometimes needs to let things go. (and where is mr kanga?)
  • roo- ah, the joy of youth. roo has a zest for life much like tigger's, which is perhaps why they get along so well. however, roo sometimes fails to see danger and naively walk into the face of it
  • owl- the wisest of the bunch. or is he? owl is, without a doubt, a bright guy. he uses logic, however faulty, to prove something, or determine something, or answer some questions poor piglet and pooh may have. owl's main fault, in my opinion, is that he will not admit fallibility. he holds whatever knowledge and education he has over everyone else, and refuses to listen to anyone's opinion because he assumes his is the right one to begin with.
note: i think the way i write this reflects my mood right now... a wee bit sour, but still energetic and excited about things.

so i'm not sure exactly where i'd be, since i sometimes feel like eeyore, but sometimes feel like tigger. i think, in general, and especially now, i'm like tigger. i'm excited about stuff, but it only takes one thing to bring me down. i have to say i probably respect pooh the most, though sometimes it bothers me that he can be so oblivious and not care. i mean, what would the german railroad be like if pooh was in charge?!

anyway, where do all you stand? which character are you most like? and which do you respect/admire the most?

I was going to say owl before your description of him. But I don't remember the characters at all. Maybe Tigger too?

i don't think owl's a bad guy. i'm just really down on know-it-alls, since i work with a lot of them. and i think owl's kind of a know-it-all

Remember when I suggested this book to you when I was in 8th grade? I remember. We read it in class then.

I am intrigue since I played the OWL in the sixth grade production of saint winnie the pooh back at St. Iggies in 1963. I remember I had to wear a big paper mache head and I was sweating like mad. I don't remember anyone asking for my autograph after the show, not even Grammie.

I, too, have theatrical experience in the realm of Winnie the Pooh. I played Eeyore in a fifth grade production at Columbus School for Girls. The dialogue was entirely in Spanish. My mom sewed a tail onto my dad's gray sweats, and combined with my preteen angst, the miserable donkey really came to life.
