beijing, 2008 (part 1)
behold! the golden apple!
I'm in Beijing right now. unless you've been living under a rock for the last fifteen years, you know what that means. you know that, in Chinese, "2008" has a completely different meaning than a mere number or year. if you've been in china for more than a week in the last decade you've heard those damn songs about "one world, one dream" enough to recite them without any effort or consciousness.
the best part? well, there are a few magnificent aspects of this whole thing for me right now. first, my boss invited me as a friend. aside from that just being plain wonderful, it also means that, when otherwise impossible, I can take thus time off of work. everything has been arranged for me, so there are no difficulties or headaches (for me, at least). I get to spend the weekend with three really great people. not to mention that this would otherwise be financially impossible.
so why, you may ask, am I only posting a blog now? was there not enough excitement about seeing china's years of hard work put into motion? not enough adventure getting around in a city where there's traffic 24 hours a day, even with only half of the cars on the road (today is odd numbered plates, by the way)?
nope. it's because I finally found it. it took about an hour of wandering in the heat, two failed attempts, forever on my iPhone trying to search china's version of google for an updated address I could show to a taxi driver or cop. and a wonderful girlfriend who used her magic and sent me a map of how to get here. fool proof. and now I'm here.
at the only apple store in china.
thank you, gods, for granting me this opportunity.
[note: I'll post pictures once I get back to hangzhou]
