american cell phone companies (part 4?)
[it will be very difficult for me to refrain from using profanity. so be grateful that you're getting the censored version.]
fuck american cell phone service providers.
i recently received an email from AT&T, locked US carrier of the apple iPhone. the email was short: please contact AT&T regarding your account. i called them thursday morning, sept 4. i had cancelled my iPhone contract on august 21, two days after my first thirty days was up. i read through my contract with a fine toothed comb before signing it, and i knew damn well what my terms were. pay for thirty days, pay an activation and termination fee, plus a pro-rated portion of the second month (for me, it'd be two days). but apparently it was more complicated.
when i first got my iPhone, they gave me a temporary number. i spent a few hours in the AT&T store the next day working with leshawn to port over my old number. stupid freaking moron actually gave me a brand new account. so i had this enormous bill sitting on an account that i cancelled 24 hours after i started it, and was told that all billing would be transferred over. but nope.
so, my one month i was in the states, my bill was about $140. i have no idea why it was that high, but i already paid it, and figured it was my fault (texts, etc). but why would my mysterious bill be $180, plus the $170 early termination fee? and why in the hell wasn't my contract cancelled?
so i spent an hour on the phone with them thursday morning. she told me she'd call me back this morning, but i never heard the phone ring. i called back tonight and spent over an hour (plus hold time) re-explaining the situation. turns out, not only did i not cancel the first account (the temporary one), but when i called and cancelled my real account, the dude forgot to push enter or something. so as of thursday, i had TWO active iPhone accounts, one IMEI number (proof that i only had one phone). and i've been charged for every minute of it until about ten minutes ago.
and she said it was my fault for not canceling. please, latrine (sp?), tell me. why the hell would i not cancel my temporary number when it was replaced with my real number? why would i have two active iPhone accounts when you silly bastards lock my account to my iPhone and my iPhone to my account?
so i guess my iPhone 3G was a bit more of an investment than i intended. i should have just gone to hong kong and gotten an unlocked one for $1,000. it would have been a hell of a lot easier (and probably cheaper).
so, i'll say it again:
fuck american cell service providers. and may they all rot in hell.
[update: update: they sent me another bill for $265.43]
comments:
note also that in china, i get 80MB of (somewhat slow) data, 500 text messages, and 500 minutes for 100RMB/month. about $15. compare that to the $80 minimum in the states. god it makes me angry.
