music sampling

what is the deal with people stealing real musicians' music, using thirty seconds of it, adding in some other crap, and calling it their's?

rappers do this all the time. they can't think of any real music to get your attention, to make their song memorable, so they find some song that was popular long ago, and figure they could capitalize on the fact that this generation is probably not too familiar with it. sure, there are times when it adds to a song. like when the beatles say "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" at the end of all you need is love. but that's because they already have a song to build on.

I'm sitting waiting for daisy while she gets her hair cut. they played the beginning of dangerous, one of michael Jackson's finest. I got so excited I almost started to shout to everyone here that it's a great song. but then some dumbass rapper started grunting when mike usually rocks the house.

make your own music if you want to call it your own. and DON'T tease me with mj samples!

Wow. Okay, Pete. You have pushed a lot of my buttons here. I really couldn't disagree with you more about this sort of thing. Um... wow. I don't think I can be intelligible on this topic. You might be interested in this article:

poppy, i'm not saying it's a crime... i'm saying it's a cop out. i'm not saying it should be illegal, it's just against myrules. do you know what i mean? see the difference? i'm not saying it's morally wrong, just wrong by me. sorry i pushed your buttons. but i feel kinda strongly about this too...

Don't worry; they're not emotional buttons, really. Mostly academic ones. And for the record, I like my buttons being pushed. (If I didn't, I'd have used a word like "trigger.") The article _doesn't_ relate directly to this topic, but it is related tangentially and I thought you might find it interesting.

It's just that derivative art is my passion. Being a fan is part of that, but not all of it by a long shot. Additionally, remixes and reworkings are a big part of dance music, which is the first music that I ever really loved.

You know, I wrote this whole other paragraph here, but then I realized that I'm just criticizing you for stating your opinion like it's actual fact. Which I do on my blog all the time. I guess it was just a bit jarring because I know the exact opposite opinion is actually the "correct" one, so.

Basically, I think your rules are kinda dumb. ;) By the way, stuff on your website is constantly reminding me of MC Frontalot songs! I don't know if you're familiar with him. He sort of created "nerdcore hip-hop" as a genre of music. (While we're already in trouble, we'll wring another single out of old Clyde Stubblefield.)
