photos: google vs yahoo

i've been doing some development on avalantern today. yes, that's right. i'm excited too. and i'm actually making some progress. now just wait for me to finish season two of LOST and maybe i'll be able to work on it some more.

anyway, i've been working on the photos section. i know a lot of you have your photos up and organized and pretty much devoted to google's picasa or yahoo's flickr, so i've been writing up a way that you can keep your photos wherever they are -- as well as the tools that each of those services provide -- yet still see them on avalantern. note that you can always go the old fashioned route and actually post to avalantern. i get unlimited storage, so it's all the same to me.

anyway, in researching this, i've been learning quite a bit about picasa, and comparing it to what i already know about flickr (i used to be an avid fan of flickr until a few creeps started favoriting some of my pictures which included small children). and i'm very torn over which i should do. if i stay with flickr, and actually start using it more again, i'll need to pay $25/yr.

here are some things i've learned:

  flickr picasa
free account: 100mb/month, but only displays your most recent 200 photos 1gb forever, and displays all photos
"pro" account: $25/yr $20 - $400 / yr
what you get with a pro account: unlimited storage roughly $20/10gb/yr
tools: stuff for uploading stuff for organizing and uploading
ease of sharing: easy to read/use API (code), lots of different sizes of each photo, simple links that are human-readable unnecessarily complicated code, not too many sizes (lots of small, but no medium), links that make no sense to me

i really like google's way of uploading the photos (it's easier to remember which you've uploaded and which you haven't), and most other tools are the same. and i like having my google account be my primary internet ID (email, calendar, documents, etc). i also don't like the community on flickr (they creep me out). but i'm really torn. i can't believe google is asking me to pay that much money. everything google does is free. that's one reason i love them. but i'd need to pay at least $40/yr for google.

what do you guys think? i know most of you use flickr. and some of you use your .mac (apple's mobile me) account. i have a lot of server space, so i hate paying for more. but then i'd lost all those valuable tools (and someone else maintaing it).

maybe i'll just become a genius and win the lottery so i have more time and write some cool website of my own.
