boo ticketmaster
so here's my opinion piece of the day:
boycott ticketmaster.
i know you all want to. what with the 60% "service charges" on top of the 40% "convenience charges" on top of the already heavy ticket price. if ticketmaster hadn't somehow gotten an absolute monopoly on the ticketselling market, they'd go under in no time.
long ago, will and i bought tickets to see the shins and the one and only snoop doggy dogg (guess which i actually bought the tickets for). they were $20 tickets that somehow totaled $69 for two people (this is absolutely not an exaggeration). the show was to be at apline valley music, which is about 80 miles away from my home, in wisconsin. a bit of a drag. an outdoor venue that takes at least 90 minutes to get to, plus at least 120 minutes to get through traffic on the way home. not my preferred way to see a show, but i really wanted to see the shins.
anyway, it turns out the show was a huge festival starting at 1:00pm. we only wanted to see the shins and a wee bit of snoop, so we got there at 7:30, right after snoop started. but something was off. there was no traffic, no noise, no anything. and the parking lot was chained off. i ran into the lot and saw the stage: empty. no cars, no people, no drugs, no snoop (obviously, based on the lack of drugs). we ran around trying to figure out what the hell was going on and then decided to ask a nearby hotel. "what? they didn't tell you? that show was moved to somewhere in chicago..." sweet. thanks, ticketmaster, for notifying us*.
*note: i've gone through all my trashed mail (from as early as july), my archived mail, all three accounts, and each and every IMAP folder. no email from ticketmaster unless it was an advertisement.
boo, ticketmaster.
[update (September 4, 2007 @ 4:13pm): they refunded the money. we still missed the show, but at least we got a refund]

It really irritates me when people that have monopolies on things do things in evil ways. Like the RIAA or MPAA. But you can at least understand why the RIAA sucks, they are grasping at straws. However, what happened here with Ticketmaster is completely inexcusable. There is no reason for why they could have done that. In a just world you would get your money back and tickets to another show. It's like with airlines, when they mess up, they at least pay you back nicely.
