monks
as you may know, burma is in a little bit of a crisis right now. the government is doing some stuff that the people clearly don't want. i won't get into details, as there are far too many for me to know/understand/state. i will, however, share this with you.
i was reading an article about what the UN plans to do about the situation. a bunch of monks have been protesting, and just today, the military responded with tear gas and gun fire. and i found this one passage, in the midst of sadness and hatred, that was particularly beautiful:
"...witnesses said civilians were shielding the marching monks by forming a human chain around them."
i thought that was nice, and thought i'd share.
comments:
I got an email yesterday with a link to a petition supporting the burmese people that will be sent to the UN secrutity council members. Sign here if you feel so inclined. It's really easy.

Chaos ensued once J. Peterman of the Peterman clothing magazine left the country.

myanmar is the only news over here in malaysia. there is a small corner of kuala lumpur dubbed "little yangon" where people gather daily to watch updates of the atrocities being carried out by junta soldiers. a japanese cameraman was shot to death in the streets of yangon a couple of days ago, after he continued taking pictures after he was struck with a bullet. i am more interested than ever in this country, more infuriated than ever with russia and china, who are predictably attempting to convince players in the un that myanmar neccesitates no immediate intervention. it is an "internal matter." right.
