2007 blog action day
so today is blog action day, a day where some 150,000 registered bloggers write about a way to make the world a better place by improving our treatment of the environment.
since peterdot is generally a blog i'd classify as "endless ramblings", i'll do just that.
liza came to visit this weekend. it was great. we explored the better parts (yes! there are parts that aren't horrible!) of houston, drank coffee and chatted, drank wine, watched an IMAX movie about sea monsters. it was really wonderful. this weekend made it particularly difficult for me to return to my regular life, but all things must pass, eh?
anyway, one of our chats was an in depth discussion about how ridiculous america is when it comes to the way we deal with environmental issues. granted, we both are products of CC (and the things that made us want to go to CC), so our ideas may be a little "greener" than the average hippy. my focus was on public transportation, as it reduces the need for oil (look at san francisco-- every street car runs off electricity, which means they are already set up for a more efficient energy technology. we just need to find it); liza's main focus was on reducing waste and unnecessary use of various things (plastic bags, A/C, etc), as well as recycling those things that you do use.
rather than rant endlessly about public transportation, or how absurd the average texan car is, or how i've had a minor cold since coming to texas because every building is air conditioned to be about 60 degrees, i'll just say this: try to be aware of what you're doing, because every little thing adds up. if you can afford the time to walk some place, walk there. if you go to the store for a bunch of bananas, bring a backpack, rather than using a plastic bag. buy an oscillating fan and sit in front of it rather than keeping your apartment refrigerated 24 hours a day. don't buy bottled water. take a train if there exists one that goes where you're going. get e-billing so you don't get a twelve pound envelope every month. call me a hippy if you want, but pretty soon this stuff is gonna matter to all of us, hippy or not.
