karma...?

so, as some of you may know, i recently hacked my iPhone v1.1.1. this was a pretty big deal for me, as i've been super paranoid ever since apple released a statement saying any "modified" iPhones would be rendered "completely inoperable" when updated to 1.1.1. those aren't exactly two words i'd like to hear when thinking of my iPhone.

and, except for a few minor things, the hack went along perfectly, thanks to two lovely apps, iNdependence (using methods by the iPhone dev team) and AppTapp, each written purely for the goodness of the universe by extremely intelligent people, likely on their own time.

anyway, credited in part to benj, i have recently realized two things: 1) i want to program for a living, making free programs for cool computer people. 2) people who make free programs for cool computer people depend on donations from said cool computer people. so, i've not illegally downloaded or pirated anything in quite some time, and i've donated something for nearly every program i've found remotely useful.

the people that made my iPhone what iPhones should be have made my life a million times better. and for that, i am forever grateful. but how do i go about donating when i'm not sure how the money's distributed, or how the work-load was distributed? do i give it to the dev team, who first discovered how to hack? iNdependence for making it easy? or nullriver for making AppTapp, which is the only reason i hacked in the first place? i feel like the real hackers are the ones who deserve it the most, but i used the app-writers work the most. meh. so stressful.

times like this, i wish i had lots of money. or the grace to write a really nice thank you note. but i'm still working on my thank you note to neil young, which i've been drafting since 1998...
