  Band   notes
1. Bright Eyes Fuck you if you don't like his voice. He's as good and as ambitious as Dylan.
2. Okkervil River Three words: Black Sheep Boy. It's the best concept album I've heard in a long time and bears many similarities to PF's The Wall.
3. (Going Out On A Limb Here) Godspeed! You Black Emperor Why can't we have intellectual jambands at CC? That would be so cool.
4. Dirty On Purpose I like 'em better than Broken Social Scene--hope that's enough to spark your interest.
5. Jeff Tweedy Solo-only. None of that Wilco stuff except YHF

Oh, oh, oh, this is all current shit. Hope that's okay. Permanent fixtures in this category would be: Bright Eyes, Pink Floyd and others...

  Band   notes
1. The Beatles This cannot be disputed. Best band ever
2. Radiohead Thom Yorke is amazing, and without the others, it would not be complete.
3. Smashing Pumpkins Though it really is just Billy's Band, they did something to him to make him do incredible stuff. Without them, he failed to do much that was spectacular
4. Pink Floyd Yup
5. The Shins Is this really my five spot? I think so...

note: by best band, i mean simply that each of these groups are comprised of amazing musicians that somehow can't seem to be able to make it on their own. though some have had success alone, it stands no where close to when they're together. i also mean that most of the music made by these guys can't really be simplified while keeping its excellence. possible others: rem, the decemberists, the notwist, sunny day, the velvet teen, the dead, the beta band

  Band   notes
1. The Beatles They rock.
2. Radiohead Straight up "alternative," being raped by aliens, farting on keyboards, and just being really cool. They can do it all.
3. R.E.M. Jangly
4. Smashing Pumpkins No notes
5. Pink Floyd Psychedelic+spacey+long+weird=Niiiiiice.

This list changes all the time. However, this is a pretty good all-time list for me.
