1. |
Anji |
Simon & Garfunkel |
on the album 'Sounds of Silence' - that damn hippy knows how to do something right |
2. |
Little Martha |
Allman Bros. |
on the album 'eat a peach' - a perfect conclusion to a great album |
3. |
The Frail |
Nine Inch Nails |
on the album 'the fragile (left)' - fantastic album. i especially like how this song is really just foreplay for "the fragile" |
4. |
Black Mountain Side |
Led Zeppelin |
on the album 'Led Zeppelin (I)' - this is just a great song. i may think led zeppelin is overrated, but they're still really really good |
5. |
Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness |
Smashing Pumpkins |
on 'Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness' - note. i do not think this is thre greatest song ever. i think it's good. but more importantly, i think this is the kind of song that i think the list is targeted at, and it's on a great album, and it's a good song on a great album. more importantly, i think it's a two and a half minute instrumental song that stands out from the rest of the album quite a bit in style, mood, and level of calm. |
note. this list was very carefully crafted. i'm not entirely sure if it's what will meant for it to be, but these were my criteria: all songs are between 1:50 and 2:40. all songs are not only instrumental, as described by the title, but they are also instrumental on an album that is almost entirely not instrumental. what's more is that these are all songs that are vastly different than the rest of the album
other noteables: man on the beach in brazil (mice parade. this would be number one, except it's not entirley instrumental), transitories (by calexico), the emperor of wyoming (neil), and a few more. these didn't make the list primarily because they didn't fir the criteria, and at the same time, the five on my list are quite good songs, i think
