a surge of un-luck

not sure if i've mentioned it before, but i've had some nasty luck when it comes to my apartment here. the place is great, and anyone who can help to make it better has and will, but somehow, i've just had the worst of luck.

the first day i was here, after 53 hours of travel, i turned on my water heater to take a nice cozy shower. i had just started washing my hair (that's right, klcomp! it does happen sometimes!) when boom! the lights when out. and the heat. and my ability to maneuver in my new apartment, at that time cluttered with all my stuff. it took me a while to find the fuse box, but i found it eventually.

i figured it was because i had the water heater on as well as both heaters in my apartment. so from then on, i turned one off when i turned on another. it seemed to do the trick.

except when i was doing my laundry, and noticed in the middle of the night that my fuse blew again. still not sure why.

so the power went out a few more times (all fuse related, and easy to fix). drag.

and this morning was my morning to sleep in. i was supposed to work today (saturday), but the snow is so bad that they called off. no work! i get to sleep in! i woke up at 7 to verify that i didn't need to work, but i couldn't sleep. my feet were freeeezing. i curled into a ball before i realize that the little red light on my heater was off. in fact, the little red lights on everything were off. (i checked my phone, which hadn't had power since 12:15.) i went to throw the fuse. but whaaaa? the fuse is fine. i tried a bunch of stuff before i called my boss, who sent someone over.

turns out some of the wires were totally fried. totally. unusable. so he jerry rigged up the whole box so that i could have power, though i'm not sure how long it'll last. i'm afraid to plug in any of my electronics. i'm afraid to use my water heater. so now i've got two and a half more hours to enjoy my computer before the battery dies and i let it. i guess i'll have to use... what are those things called... books, right? nah. i can find something else to entertain me.

[update 2008-02-02 18:36 Hangzhou time] it took til around 4:00pm to get fixed. we went through three (!!) different circuit breakers. the guy had a very very cool hat, though
